Lap dancing clubs are licensed like cafes. It is only because of a legal loop hole that they are not licensed in the same way as peep shows - as 'Sex Encounter Establishments'.

A Sex Encounter Establishment is 'a venue whose purpose is to provide visual sexual stimulation'.

Lap dancing clubs provide semi nude and nude performances, frequently in private booths. Clearly they are Sex Encounter Establishments.

Cafe-style licensing means that local people have little say in where, or how many, clubs set up. It has allowed massive expansion of the industry and its normalising into mainstream culture. It means regulation is so minimal that clubs can be part of the commercial sex industry (with a culture of expectation and demand for sexual services).

Licensing as a Sex Encounter Establishment would allow far greater control and regulation.

Stripping The Illusion is a broad coalition of MPs, peers, councillors and human rights goups. We call for lap dancing to be licensed, regulated and recognised for what it is.
