The Personal

Object was set up by concerned members of the public from a diverse range of backgrounds. It grew from an informal precursor, Campaign Women, set up in 2001 by our current director :

" Like a lot of our supporters, I looked around my local sweet shop one day and just saw wall-to-wall porn. So I set up a website and 'e' newsletter, which immediately attracted supporters and women's organisations - many of whom are still loyal supporters." Founder and Director

Why We Were Set Up

The Political

At the same time, an entire culture of objectification was growing. Lad's mags were becoming increasingly sexual and contemptuous, lap dancing was starting to expand. Whilst there was no acceptable opposition, the many individuals who did not like what they saw felt alienated and silenced.

The scene was set for 'pornification'. And this has been so successfully accomplished that by 2007, mainstream retailers were selling pole dancing kits (Tesco) or Playboy bedding (Argos) to children and Job Centres were carrying adverts for lap dancing clubs and escort agencies.
