OBJECT believes that you cannot separate the fact that we are bombarded with sexist images of women in poses which stem from pornography, depicting women as always 'up' for sex - no matter what - from the endemic violence which still exists against women [1 in 3 women experience violence, Amnesty International].

The media plays a fundamental role in establishing, legitimising and promoting harmful attitudes. This somewhat self-evident statement is supported by numerous studies, such as that by the Institute of Education [2003] showing that 2/3 of young people see the media as a major way to find out about sex and relationships.

These attitudes lead to gender inequality and legitimises violence against women. It is therefore crucial to scrutinise bodies as poweful as the media and hold it accountable for the messages it promotes.

We seek a socially responsible media which promotes healthy, non-stereotyping attitudes.
